City of Chicago Property Tax Relief Program

City of Chicago Property Tax Relief Program

Dear Homeowner,

As you know, we are currently experiencing the worst economic global recession since the Great Depression 70 years ago. I’m very concerned that too many people here in Chicago are struggling to make ends meet and keep their homes.

During these tough times, we are doing all we can to protect Chicago's working and middle-class families, our seniors and other residents.

New higher city property taxes are the last thing we should be asking homeowners to pay next year.
Homeowners need property tax relief, and they need it now.
That's why I recently proposed and the City Council passed, the City of Chicago’s Property Tax Relief Program.

It is meant to provide relief between $25 and $200 to City homeowners hit hardest by increases to their 2008 property tax bill for their primary residence. This program is needed largely because of the phase-out of the state law that put a 7 percent cap on the annual increase in the taxable value of home property, and because the drop of this year's exemption under that law went to $20,000 from $26,000.

The amount of tax relief you might receive is based on a combination of income level and the amount of your property tax increase. For example, the lower your income and the higher your property tax increase, the more relief you’ll be eligible for.

On this website, you will be able to find an application, instructions and helpful tools to guide you through the application process.

Chicago's working families are the heart and soul of our city. We hope the Property Tax Relief Program will provide you with some assistance during these tough times.
Sincerely,
Mayor Richard M. Daley

Chicago Fire Dept. veteran named Illinois State Marshal

Chicago Fire Dept. veteran named Illinois State Marshal

Comments January 2, 2010 SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE

A 30-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department — who rose in rank from paramedic to executive assistant to the fire commissioner — has been named the Illinois State Fire Marshal, the governor's office announced Saturday. Larry Matkaitis currently serves as the northern regional administrator in the Office of State Fire Marshal, a position he's held since 2005.

Matkaitis served for over three decades within the Chicago Fire Dept., rising from paramedic to chief paramedic and later assistant deputy fire commission for emergency medical operations, according to a release from Gov. Pat Quinn's office. After attending Northern Illinois University, he served in the U.S. Army for six years before being honorably discharged in 1976. He has also been a FAA-certified pilot since 1969.

"The Fire Marshal is dedicated to protecting our well-being from fire safety and prevention to elevator inspection and review," Quinn said in the release. " Larry brings a wealth of experience and dedication to this important role."

The office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal works together with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) and local departments to respond to man-made and natural emergencies, the release said. The agency also works closely with local fire departments to teach and regulate fire safety and prevention through inspections and setting personnel and education standards for Illinois firefighters.

Is a history of suspended license enough to get dropped from the medic hiring processing.

Dadgerbob83, Nothing you can do until you back in Chicago. You would have to get certified in the state before you can put your name on the CFD hire list.

Hello everyone. I've mentioned it before, but I was hired by CFD as a paramedic about a year ago and would be more than happy to answer any questions you guys have during the process. This is the best job in the world. I am very happy for everyone getting processed. Give me a PM so we don't bog down the chatbox. Anyways Good Luck to everyone.

Sorry as mentioned it was something I heard IE not something set in stone but hopefully everyone gets on

Mar 01: 18:28
yeah I don't think there is any way the city would wait till the next fire test to hire medics seeing as, if the trend continues as it has since 1985, the next test won't be until 2015. The city has, as far as I have seen it, opened up the medic list every 3-4 years shortly after the old list finishes.

Mar 01: 18:06
Well if they are in the 400's then they should be pretty close to opening a new list because Daley said he is mad about the overtime. They need to keep hiring after these 100 or so are done with the process.
